Costumes break through Bay to Breakers
On May 17th, 2009, runners from around the world will gather in the Bay Area to run the San Francisco race, Bay to Breakers. Folks will style this race out in costumes ranging from super heroes, to a Vegas casino, to pirates, and everything in between. Floats are encouraged, and nudity plus alcohol accompany the theme of the 12k race from the Bay side of San Francisco to the Pacific side at Ocean Beach.
Running in costume isn’t something limited to Bay to Breakers, and it certainly isn’t new to the running community. “Exhibitionist-runners” challenge the traditional shorts and a singlet attire at all distances, 5k, 10k, 12k, Half Marathon, Marathon, Ultra, etc. These bold costumed runners entertain crowds and make a light hearted spirit of the competitive nature of a race. In honor of the upcoming Bay to Breakers race, I put together a short collage of some of my favorite costumed runners. (By the way, this year I’ll be dressing up with a group of fellow SF athletes and running the race. Our theme: Risky Business. If you’re in need of a B2B troop, we’d love to have you join our group. Check it out on Facebook)

I just had to add one note that my favorite costume from this group is the pancake runner. Looks like he’s so fast, and he’s wearing a Krustez costume! I think the runner next to him may be on the verge of being overtaken by the flapjack!
