Six things to throw away from your cupboard
It’s easy and we all know it; there are certain foods that don’t help us run faster. But when they’re in our cupboards, it’s hard to resist and we often end up making compromises (I’ll run an extra mile today for those cookies I ate after lunch). This year I’m going to be getting rid of these calorie culprits and hopefully help out my training. I think my body is going to be thankful.
Here’s a list of what I’m tossin’ and what I’ll be replacing it with:
- Gone: Soda. I don’t drink much of it, but every now and then I’ll pop open a can of Diet Coke. Replacing with Perrier, or Pellegrino
- Gone: Potato chip. Fattening, and I end up eating the whole bag! Replacing with baked whole grain crackers.
- Gone: Gummi bears. Can never eat just one, and they’re loaded with sugar. Replacing with dried fruit
- Gone: Cookies. Loaded with calories, and easy to pop more than a few in my mouth before realizing I’ve had five too many. Replacing with animal crackers, or graham crackers
- Gone: Convenience food. This food is way too easy to quickly turn into a meal, but the problem is that they have no nutritional value, and they’re high in calories and sodium. Examples: Mac ‘n Cheese, frozen pizza (anything pre-packaged and processed). Replacing with an actual meal, make time to cook and eat.
- Gone: Flavored oatmeal. Too much sugar. Replacing with stone ground or rolled oats and instead of sugar, adding honey, cinnamon, nuts, raisins, or jam.

Convience food and Diet Coke are the biggies for me!! Oh how I love Diet Coke! And I am so busy that I just don’t cook a lot during the week. I am going to start preparing some sides, salads, etc. on Sundays so then all I have to do when I get home from work is cook up the main part of dinner.

This is really helpful. I agree with Angela, I can’t start my day without a diet coke. You know, as runners, it’s easy to think that we can eat whatever we want because we’ll just burn it off. I often need a reality check that what I put in my body can still have an adverse affect. Although, I would say baked chips (like Baked Lays) are a good alternative to regular potato chips if you’re craving something salty.

So, I was all pumped to follow this, right? I’m, like, throwing away potato chips and saying goodbye to Coke Zero…
And I go to get the mail, and a friend of mine sent me a box of CHRISTMAS COOKIES. Shit. I’ve already eaten three today. I’m so screwed.

Cookies are the bane of my existence. I never eat packaged cookies, I always make them from scratch so it’s a little bit better, but still…
