Runnerspeak 101: Are you a runner or a jogger?

Runnerspeak 101: It’s considered an insult to call a runner a jogger. Runners are passionate about what they do, and how they are competing. So… don’t belittle us by asking how the “jog” was.

My dad (a runner himself) always said that what separates a runner from a jogger is one thing: an entry form.

I think that sums it up pretty well.

So…is running a state of mind, not a pace?

Because I consider my pace way more of a jog than a run, but I am totally passionate about it, love it, and can’t wait for my races…

If I am not walking, I am running. Although I like the entry form answer!

I would argue that run-walk is more natural than running. I forefathers never ran continuously, they always did run-walk!

Love the “run easy is an oxymoron” quote on the We Are Not Joggers web site.

Great post by the way :)

It’s taken me a while to grapple with calling myself a runner. I’ve done a few races, am in the middle of the pack (between 9 and 10 min pace). But for some reason, I don’t feel like I’ll be a real runner until a finish a marathon. Call me crazy, but that’s my own little benchmark. So for now, while I “run,” I’m not sure I’m a “runner.”

I consider myself “running” when it feels like I’m projecting or throwing my legs into as long a stride as I can muster. If my hips feel like they’re taking it easy and my stride is short, I consider it jogging. It doesn’t make me happy, but some days are like that.

The entry form answer is thought-provoking; however, for me, I compete without formal races. That is, when I run, I try to pass people on my route and not be passed (to the degree possible).

I like this, Chaz. Simple, and I think runners totally understand where your dad is coming from.

what is a jog, anyway?

I like the “jogger” in the pic…she looks like she is run-dancing…maybe sweating to the oldies in the 70′s :)

I think of myself as a runner and feel weird when people call me a jogger. But whatevs..they just don’t know the deal :)

My ex insisted on calling what I do “jogging” even though I told him a zillion times that the term irritated me. Poof, begone!
