Creativity in the Fruitcake
I have been known to enjoy a good Italian pantone, light, or dark… even a citron (although these are usually enjoyed for soccer practice). However, I am sad to say that I didn’t make it to the 3rd Annual Internationally (and possibly Intergalactically) Acclaimed Independence Fruitcake Festival. Hopefully I’ll be able to attend next year.
Fruitcakes are a perplexing part of holiday celebrations, and they get a bad rap. While many an American family has one, if not more fruitcakes in their home over the holidays, these works of culinary art are always labeled as the unwanted gift that usually comes from that person that “we really don’t know that well anyway.”
But I’m curious, if fruitcakes are such Christmas sores, then why do they keep popping up in our lives year after year? The folks at the Annual Fruitcake Festival have gotten things right. They embrace the fruit-ness, celebrating its beauty… and versatility.
Over generations, families have come up with alternative uses for their holiday fruitcake gifts, the least of which include consumption.
What are you planning to do with your fruitcake this year?
