Documented: ’09 Goals
It’s New Year’s Eve, and as I reflect on 2008, I find myself once again indulging in the yearly ritual of goal setting. My list of goals seems to roll over from year to year, becoming a bit more challenging with age. Last year’s list: Run the New York City Marathon Run a personal best in the marathon Stay injury free Stay motivated and happy about running I’m lucky enough to have completed most of my goals, but I fell short on one. I injured my IT band,... Read More
I do? Marathon Proposal at the CIM
This year at the California International Marathon I was running along at mile 15, when I started to see signs ticking down a marriage proposal. The first one: Dana, second: will you, third: marry, fourth: me. Just after the last sign, what looked like the soon to be (hopefully) groom was standing with a radio (no doubt necessary to keep tabs on his girlfriend’s ETA), decked out in full tuxedo. So in my marathon state of mind, I let my thoughts wander all over this guy’s... Read More
Cutting back on mileage and race times
Cross training for optimal performance can help improve race times and cut back on injuries. It’s also good for runners who don’t have enough time in the day to get in a regular run. I’ve been trying mix in as much cross training as I can with weights, pilates, and yoga. Here are some videos and training tools I’ve found that help me keep motivated, and get me stronger. Women’s Running Magazine recently did an article on how to run less, but run... Read More
Asics: Speedstar 3
I don’t have much pronation, so I decided to used the the Asics Speedstar 3 for the California International Marathon. They’re light weight, but also surprisingly sturdy and cushioned. I haven’t run into any problems with the Speedstars, and I’ve put about 200 miles on them. One of my favorite parts of the Speestar’s is the breath-ability. The shoes have a mesh upper, keeping my feet cool and agile. Amazon.com Widgets Read More
Outrun your fears: staying safe while on the run
I am a woman, I am a runner, and I do the majority of my workouts on city streets. Sadly, this combination can be deadly if I don’t take precautions when I’m outside enjoying a run. We all think we’re invincible until one day something out of our control turns a great run in to a frightening and sometimes terrifying experience. Since I want to enjoy my sport for as long as possible, and well into old age, it’s critical for me to fully understand how to... Read More

Women’s Running Group: DailyMile
Recently, I’ve fallen in love with the new social networking site for runners and athletes: The Daily Mile (http://www.dailymile.com/groups/146-women-from-runnersworld) Why do I like it? I can easily log my miles whether they’re indoors or out, and I can get/give encouragement to fellow athletes. I just started a Women’s Running group on the Daily Mile and I’m excited to see that it’s getting some traction! If you’re new to the Daily Mile, this... Read More

The best running advice comes from the people with experience running, racing, and living a life filled with endurance. “The Best Advice” is a series of interviews with endurance athletes that highlights some of the rules they live by in a hope to pass along their lessons learned on the run. Recently I had an opportunity to participate in a race with a fellow endurance athlete... Read More
2008 Nike+ Rundown
Running with a Nike+ definitely has its advantages. Constant and instant feedback about your run during and after a workout is clutch, and a large reason why I use this gadget as one of my go to training tools. Another reason to use the Nike+ system is to take advantage of the way that Nike thinks about training, working out, and being an athlete. Nike has some experience in athletics, and I think it’s safe to say that they know their stuff. They are successful in motivating... Read More
